On October 4–5, 2025, Zugdidi will host the world’s largest global hackathon – the NASA Space Apps Challenge.
The local organizer and host of the event will be Alte University, in partnership with Zugdidi Technopark.
This year’s hackathon will take place under the theme “Learn, Launch, Lead!” and will offer participants a unique opportunity to work on real and current challenges using open data provided by NASA and its partner agencies.
- What is the NASA Space Apps Challenge?
NASA Space Apps Challenge is an international innovative project organized by the United States space agency – NASA. The global hackathon has been held since 2012, and to date, tens of thousands of people from over 160 countries around the world have participated.
The platform creates a space where science, technology, creativity, and teamwork come together. During the hackathon, participants have the opportunity to work on innovative ideas over the course of two days, create prototypes, and find solutions to challenges such as climate change, environmental protection, data visualization, software design, artificial intelligence, and more.
How Does the Hackathon Work?
Participants of the Space Apps Challenge form teams and, over two days, work on challenges developed by NASA and its partners. These challenges are prepared by NASA’s Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and cover technical, visual, analytical, and design-oriented areas.
Teams create prototypes or concepts and upload them to the official platform. Projects are evaluated both locally and globally. Local winners advance to the global stage, where representatives from NASA and partner agencies select the best solutions. Each year, ten teams receive global awards in various categories.
Who Can Participate?
Anyone can take part in the hackathon – school students, university students, programmers, designers, data analysts, researchers, or any interested individual, regardless of experience. No specific technical background is required – the main things are motivation, creativity, and willingness to work in a team.
The maximum number of participants for the event is 60.

Participation is simple:
Interested individuals must create a personal account on the official website, register as a participant in the project, select Zugdidi from the list of local events, and are encouraged to watch the registration video guide.
